40-foot container weight: tare and payload

Distinguish empty weight, payload and gross mass for a 40-foot container. Plan delivery using the actual unit’s values and the real mass of its contents.

Distinguish empty weight, payload and gross mass for a 40-foot container. Plan delivery using the actual unit’s values and the real mass of its contents.

Three different masses

Tare · empty weight

Tare is the mass of the empty container. Equipment, repairs and conversions can change it. Read the actual unit’s tare and confirm what it includes.

Maximum payload

Payload refers to the contents. Its limit is maximum gross mass minus tare; this alone does not validate concentrated floor loads or lifting conditions.

Maximum gross mass

Gross mass includes the container and its contents. The limit marked on the unit does not replace vehicle, axle, route or handling-equipment limits.

Documented example · 40-foot standard

Documented example · 40-foot standard
Tare · empty weight3,750 kg
Maximum payload28,750 kg
Maximum gross mass32,500 kg

Example from the Hapag-Lloyd fleet, checked on 16 October 2026. Values vary by manufacturer and do not describe Container Origin stock. Check the selected unit’s markings and documentation.

Calculate the mass to move

Calculation example: 3,750 kg tare + 10,000 kg contents = 13,750 kg to move. This example does not authorise loading or lifting your unit.

Information to provide

Provide the container identifier, confirmed tare, documented limits, contents mass and load distribution. Specify whether transport will be empty or loaded. Use the specific technical sheet for office, refrigerated, High Cube or converted units.

Confirm transport and handling

The carrier and lifting provider confirm the vehicle, capacity, method and access for the actual mass. Have load distribution and supports checked for your use. Volume in m³ does not establish allowable mass.

YOUR DESTINATION

A container for your project · United States

Your project for United States: use this guide to prepare placement alongside the technical container choice. If the land is away from the stated street, add directions to the entrance and a landmark. Say whether you have lifting equipment or need unloading included in the proposal.

Catalog prices in USD

Container prices exclude tax, transport and unloading. The supplier’s proposal details these separately.

Prepare your address

ZIP code · Format example
10001
Local format
5 digits; keep any leading zero

Provide the ZIP code, city, state and physical site address. A PO box does not describe where to place the container.

From truck to final position

Describe gate width, maneuvering space, ground conditions and overhead cables or branches. Say whether you have lifting equipment or need a crane truck.

Prepare for delivery

Delivery feasibility, vehicle, unloading and timing are confirmed for the supplied address. Selecting a country does not confirm local availability.
